TE AWA ATUA - Menstruation in the Pre-colonial Maori World
By Ngahuia Murphy
An Examination of Stories, Ceremonies and Practices Regarding Menstruation in the Pre-Colonial Maori World. Based on a Masters Thesis.
Te Awa Atua is the book that inspired the creation of AWWA period-proof underwear - it teaches us our pre colonial tupuna stories of our ikura (period). A wonderful addition to your library that you will not put down and never lend out!

Recommended for anyone interested in mana wahine theory and decolonisation, but also anyone really. give it to your dads, brothers, sons. Really important korero not just about the power of the bleed itself, but about wahine māori in pre-colonial times, and reclaiming and retelling the stories that have been historically suppressed and altered to suit the invaders agenda. Really powerful kaupapa.

Incredible book. I lent my old copy to many people and when it found a new home I needed to get another copy. Thank you

Very enlightening pukapuka there is so much more to learn from our tūpuna to make te awa atua normal and not something to fear.

Te Awa Atua is strong, intense, and strikes at the heart of colonial power dynamics by shifting the focus onto wahine Māori and their reality and precolonial truth. It’s an amazing book, at times angry, but it has every right to be.
