PRODUCT INFO
How does AWWA period underwear work?
AWWA period underwear is designed in New Zealand and features four advanced layers that absorb your menstrual flow, discharge, or light bladder leaks—without the need for disposable pads or tampons.
Here’s how each layer works:
- Top Layer: Soft, organic cotton sits closest to your skin—designed to wick moisture quickly, keeping you dry and comfortable.
- Second Layer: A super-absorbent core locks in fluid, holding up to 5 regular tampons’ worth (approx. 30ml) depending on the style.
- Third Layer: Antimicrobial and moisture-wicking technology helps prevent odour and keeps you feeling fresh.
- Bottom Layer: A leak-resistant barrier prevents any leaks from escaping.
This multi-layer system gives you all-day protection—whether you're dealing with your period, daily discharge, or bladder leaks. Plus, it's reusable, machine washable, and lasts for up to 2+ years with proper care.
Can AWWA period underwear replace disposable pads and tampons?
Yes—AWWA period underwear can fully replace disposable pads and tampons for many users, especially on light to moderate flow days. Our leakproof designs absorb up to 5 regular tampons' worth (approximately 30ml), depending on the style. For those with a heavier flow, you may prefer to use AWWA underwear as back-up protection with a menstrual cup or tampon, especially on your heaviest days.
Everyone’s flow is different, so we recommend starting by wearing AWWA at home or overnight to test how it works for your body. Over time, many customers confidently switch to reusable period underwear only.
Will AWWA period underwear smell or feel wet?
No—AWWA period underwear is designed to keep you dry and odour-free. Our innovative four-layer system includes:
• A moisture-wicking cotton layer that draws fluid away from your skin fast
• An antimicrobial layer that helps fight bacteria and prevent odour
• A leakproof layer to stop any moisture from seeping through
The result? You’ll stay fresh, dry, and comfortable, even on heavier days. No dampness, no smell—just confidence throughout your cycle.
How much blood can AWWA underwear hold?
AWWA period underwear can absorb up to 5 regular tampons or pads' worth of menstrual blood—that’s approximately 30 ml, depending on the style you choose. Each pair has been rigorously tested for absorbency to give you leakproof protection, whether you have a light, moderate, or heavy flow.
We offer styles with varying absorbency levels, so you can choose what’s best for your body and your cycle. Many customers confidently wear AWWA underwear alone, while others use it as backup protection on heavier days.
Do AWWA period underwear feel bulky, like you're wearing a nappy?
Not at all. AWWA period underwear looks and feels just like your regular underwear—only better. They're designed to be sleek, lightweight, and ultra-comfortable, without the bulk you might expect from leakproof layers.
Many of our customers say AWWA is actually more comfortable than their everyday underwear, thanks to the soft organic cotton, flexible fit, and breathable, moisture-wicking design. No rustling, no puffiness—just protection you’ll forget you’re wearing.
What are AWWA period underwear made of? Will they irritate my skin?
AWWA underwear is made with soft, breathable, and skin-friendly fabrics designed for comfort—even on sensitive skin. Our core materials include:
• TENCEL™ – ultra-soft, sustainable, and ideal for sensitive skin
• Organic cotton – gentle, moisture-wicking, and GOTS-certified
• Recycled nylon – durable and eco-conscious for long wear
The layer closest to your skin in every AWWA style is made from 95% organic cotton and 5% spandex, combining softness with stretch. For those with sensitive or reactive skin, we recommend our TENCEL™ and organic cotton styles for their hypoallergenic properties.
Do they contain PFAS?
No—AWWA period underwear is PFAS-free. We would never intentionally add harmful chemicals to our products, including PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). Caring for your body and Papatūānuku (our planet) is central to everything we do.
All fabrics used in our underwear have been independently tested by Bureau Veritas—a global leader in product safety testing. These tests screen for fluorine, a key indicator of PFAS. The results came back as ND (None Detected), which means less than 10 parts per million (ppm)—well below any safety threshold.

How long do AWWA period underwear last before I need to replace them?
With proper care, AWWA period underwear can last up to 2 years or more. To extend their lifespan, we recommend the following:
- Avoid fabric softener and tumble drying, as these can damage the absorbent layers and leakproof membrane
- Follow our full care instructions (cold rinse, gentle machine wash, air dry)
You'll know it's time to replace your AWWA underwear when you notice leaks seeping through the bottom layer—a sign the leakproof membrane is no longer effective. On average, most users get 50+ washes out of each pair with proper care.
What size AWWA period underwear should I buy?
To find your perfect fit, we recommend using our AWWA Size Guide and measuring your body before ordering. Your hip measurement is the most important factor when choosing period underwear, as it ensures a secure, leakproof fit.
For high-waisted styles, it's also helpful to measure your waist.
If you're between sizes, many customers prefer to size up for added comfort, especially during bloating or hormonal changes.
👉 Use our Size Guide to measure and find your fit.
Can I wear AWWA period underwear for pregnancy or postpartum?
Yes! AWWA underwear is great for pregnancy and postpartum use. During pregnancy, our leakproof underwear helps manage light bladder leaks and daily discharge comfortably and discreetly.
For postpartum recovery, we recommend waiting a few days after birth before wearing AWWA. In the early days, lochia and blood clots (which contain thicker, mucous-like discharge) may not absorb effectively into the gusset—similar to how standard pads can struggle with clots. Once your postpartum flow lightens, AWWA can offer breathable, comfortable support without disposable pads.
Can they be used for light bladder leaks or discharge?
Absolutely! AWWA underwear is perfect for light bladder leaks, spotting, and everyday discharge. Whether you’re pregnant, postpartum, peri-menopausal, or just want extra peace of mind, our leakproof layers offer comfortable, discreet protection—without the bulk of liners or pads.
Many customers love AWWA so much they wear them daily, even when not on their period. They’re breathable, moisture-wicking, and feel just like your regular underwear—only better.
HOW TO CARE FOR AWWA
Should I wash my AWWA period underwear before wearing?
Yes—we recommend washing your AWWA underwear before your first wear, especially before using them for your ikura (period). Washing activates the absorbent technology in the gusset, helping it perform at its best from day one.
This step also ensures the fabric is clean and ready for direct skin contact—just like any new garment.
How do I wash my AWWA period underwear?
Washing your AWWA period underwear is simple—and key to keeping them working their best. Follow these steps:
- Rinse thoroughly by hand in cold water after use to remove excess blood.
- Machine wash cold with your regular laundry (on a gentle cycle).
- Line dry or hang dry—no dryer!
Do not use fabric softener or bleach, as they can damage the moisture-wicking and antimicrobial technology, reducing absorbency over time.
With proper care, your AWWA underwear can last up to 2+ years or 50+ washes.
Why do my AWWA period underwear smell, even after washing?
If your AWWA underwear still smells after washing, it's likely due to bacteria build-up or detergent residue. Here’s how to keep them fresh and odour-free:
Tips to Prevent Odour:
- Rinse thoroughly in cold water until it runs clear before washing.
- Don’t let rinsed undies sit wet—hang to dry if you’re not washing them immediately.
- Use the right amount of detergent—too much can cause build-up, trapping bacteria.
- Avoid fabric softeners, scent boosters, or laundry additives—these coat the fabric and reduce absorbency.
- Always air-dry completely before storing to prevent bacteria growth.
Still noticing odour? Try a deep clean:
- Soak your underwear in a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 4 parts water for 30–60 minutes.
- Wash as usual and dry in sunlight for a natural bacteria-fighting boost.
With the right care, your AWWA underwear should stay fresh, leakproof, and comfortable for 2+ years.
Can I put my AWWA period underwear in the dryer?
We don’t recommend using a dryer for AWWA period underwear. Even on a low heat setting, dryer temperatures can vary and may get hot enough to damage the leakproof layer, reducing absorbency and causing future leaks.
To protect your underwear and extend their lifespan, it’s best to line dry or air dry them away from direct heat. With proper care—including air drying—AWWA underwear can last up to 2+ years.
