The Research on Lead in Tampons
You may have seen recently news of harmful metals being found in many brands of tampons. We have been overwhelmed with messages asking us to comment on what we know and also asking for us to extend our recent sale. Because of the volume and because its our mission to get everyone to ditch single use period products we have decided to not only extend our sale for a few days but to increase our discounts - making AWWA cheaper than tampons!
But first - This is what we know:
A recent study to measure toxic metals in tampons shows arsenic and lead, among other contaminants. Researchers evaluated levels of 16 metals (arsenic, barium, calcium, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, mercury, nickel, lead, selenium, strontium, vanadium, and zinc) in 30 tampons from 14 different brands.
One of the best things that consumers can do is educate themselves. Pay attention to ingredients. Know what the potential benefits and harms might be. Review alternative options for period care. Know your body and what works best for you.
The vaginal tissue is one of the most absorbent areas of the body. Given that period underwear isn’t inserted it eliminates the same exposure that tampons would have.
Why period underwear is a safe choice amidst concerns over chemicals in tampons. At AWWA we are dedicated to providing you with safe, chemical-free period underwear made from organic and recycled fabrics. We understand the importance of knowing what comes into contact with your body, which is why we rigorously test our fabrics for a range of chemicals to ensure they meet our high standards.
More Research is Needed. It’s important to note that while the study brings attention to the presence of certain chemicals, more research is necessary to fully understand the implications. The presence of chemicals does not automatically translate to a significant health risk. It's crucial not to panic but to stay informed and make decisions based on all of the information available.
Understanding Everyday Exposure. We live in a world where exposure to chemicals and harmful metals is almost unavoidable. These substances are present in the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the products we use daily. While the study highlights the presence of metals in tampons, it is part of a broader issue of environmental exposure.
Make the switch to period underwear. Given the recent findings, we encourage you to consider switching to period underwear. Unlike tampons and other menstrual products that are inserted into the body, period underwear offers a comfortable and safe alternative that reduces the risk of exposure to harmful chemicals.
Our Commitment to Safety. At AWWA we are committed to offering products that you can trust. Our period underwear is designed with your safety and comfort in mind, and we pride ourselves on having a fully traceable supply chain. The materials we use are tested for a number of chemicals before we agree to using them in the production of our underwear.
AWWA period underwear is currently on sale at up to 60% off! Don't miss out on your opportunity to make the switch to AWWA.
